This week, “Women In Art” features its first musical group! Portrait of a Lady is an emerging string quartet based in Montreal. With wildly different musical backgrounds and experiences scouring the worlds of classical, early music, contemporary avant-garde, funk, hip-hop, country, folk, world and indie rock these four women each bring a totally unique spin on what the string quartet should be.

It’s been a really busy year: grant writing, scouting locations, sealing sponsorships deals with music stores, two fundraisers, community outreach, policy meetings, outreach meetings, event meetings, fundraising meetings, website meetings, promotion meetings, and meetings about meetings…
I picked up the guitar once or twice, tried my hand at piano, and sung into my hairbrush. But I was scared. I was scared to fail, scared to take up too much space in making mistakes, and not being as good as the boys.
I am a dreamer, a leader, a singer-songwriter, a daughter, and I hope to someday change the world with my music, even if it is the world of one person, I know I will have contributed to making a difference in this world.
